The Discalced Carmelite Order traces its origins back to the 13th century, when a group of hermits settled on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, living a life of contemplative prayer and simplicity. Over the centuries, the order spread throughout Europe. In the 16th century, St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross initiated the Theresian Reform, returning the order to its original spirit of austerity and deep prayer. This reform led to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites, known for their dedication to contemplative life, mysticism, and spiritual teachings.
Today, the Discalced Carmelite Order is divided into three branches: the friars, the nuns, and the seculars. The friars live in community, dedicating themselves to prayer, study, and various apostolic activities. The nuns lead a cloistered life, focusing on contemplative prayer and intercession for the world. The seculars, also known as the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS), are lay people who live the Carmelite spirituality in their everyday lives, committed to prayer, community, and apostolic service while remaining active in their professions and families.
